The School of Engineering Computer-Aided-Design Lab has the Microsoft Windows XP operating system installed on all computers and is networked via a Windows NT network. All laboratory computers have full internet access. The network provides access to a variety of software packages, disk storage space for each user on the server hard drive, and easy access to any computer lab printer. The features and operating procedures for use of the CAD LAB network are outlined below:
- USER ID: All Engineering undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to obtain a user ID and password to use in the School of Engineering CAD LAB located in Carrier 127 and 108. However, during special renewal periods you may be required to renew your account.
- LOG ON: All users must log onto the network to access any of the CAD LAB computers in Carrier 127. Students other than Engineering majors are not allowed to access the computers.
- ACCOUNT USAGE: Each user must log into the computer using his own login id and password. Passwords should not be shared with anyone. If three incorrect login attempts are made, a user's account will be locked and the user must wait for the account to be reset.
- LOG OFF PROCEDURE: The following logoff procedure should be used to end each computer session. The user should select Shut Down from the Windows Start Button to begin the shut down procedure. From the Shut Down options, the "Close all programs and log on as a different user" option should be chosen. Never leave a computer without logging off using this procedure. The power to the computers and printers should only be turned off at the end of the day when the CAD LAB is closed.
- COMPUTER USAGE: The computers in the CAD LAB are for academic use only. No software should be installed by any user nor should the computer be used for any other purpose than for academia. This includes casual browsing of the Internet, instant messaging, etc. While the enforcement of minor infractions (non-academic browsing, playing games) might be overlooked during non-peak hours. The moment computer availability becomes an issue enforcement must be strictly adhered to. No user shall install any software on CADLAB Computer without proper authorization. If installed programs are found, network log records will be reviewed to determine which user was responsible for the software installation and appropriate action, that could include loss of computer access, will be taken. If you need other software, inform the lab consultants or lab director at eecadlab@olemiss.edu. CAD LAB Computers are for use by students in support of their academic studies and should not be used to play computer games. Violation of the policy could result in loss of computer access.
- PRINTER AVAILABILITY: All computers have the capability to print to any printer in the lab via the network. To print to any printer, choose the appropriate printer from the list provided using the select printer option of the software program being used. The names and locations of the available printers are shown in the printer selection list. Note that the remote printer you want to connect to must be turned on.
- PRINTER USAGE: Print only the copies you need. Paper and toner for printing are very expensive. Do not misuse this resource; it is for academic use only. In no situation should multiple copies of large documents be printed, in particular theses and dissertations. Printing log records will be reviewed and excessive printing will be charged to the individual user.
- NETWORK AVAILABILITY: Every effort will be made to maintain network availability; however, situations such as network outages could result in the interruption of the ability to connect to the Olympus server. Users should keep this in mind as they plan for known deadlines.
- NO FOOD OR BEVERAGES ARE ALLOWED IN THE CAD LAB
- DATA STORAGE: Individual folders may be used to store data and programs for a short period of time, but they will be erased during normal scheduled system maintenance. Users should back up programs and data on floppy disks or assigned disk space. Home directories have been created on the main server for individual users to store files on. When you log on your "S:" drive is mapped to this directory automatically. It is suggested that you use this special drive to store files on so that we may keep the individual machine as clean as possible. Please do not abuse this drive as all users must share the free space on the file server.
- EMAIL TERMINALS: Several computers and laptop computer access are available in Carrier 108 and in Anderson Student Lounge as e-mail terminals to provide access to relieve congestion in the CAD LAB due to the wide variety of academia users.
