EE PARTICIPATES IN ACES CONFERENCE

Students and Faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department at The University of Mississippi (UM) recently participated in the 19th Annual Review of Progress in Applied Computational Electromagnetics that was sponsored by the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES). The Review was held at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California on March 24-28, 2003, and Dr. Atef Z. Elsherbeni, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Associate Director of the Center for Applied Electromagnetic Systems Research (CAESR) at Ole Miss, served as Conference Chair.
The ACES Progress Review Conference is a highly influential outlet for promoting awareness of recent technical contributions to the advancement of computational electromagnetics. As such, it brings together developers, analysts, and users to share information and experience about practical application of EM analysis using computational methods.
The Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES) is a relatively new and unique professional society, which provides a forum for issues relevant to numerical modeling in applied electromagnetics. The primary focus of ACES is on computational techniques, electromagnetics modeling software, and applications. Thus, it is not surprising that the Electrical Engineering Department at The University of Mississippi was well represented and made significant contributions at this meeting since computational electromagnetics is one of the major focuses of the electrical engineering graduate program. Seven papers and 2 short courses were co-authored and presented by 12 EE students and faculty, as listed below.
In recognition of faculty and student support of ACES and the Conference, a large number of awards were received by the Ole Miss participants. Dr. Ahmed A. Kishk, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Associate Director of CAESR, received the Valued Contribution Award for the Outstanding Panel Presentation, "EM Modeling of Surfaces with Stop and Go Characteristics - Artificial Magnetic Conductors and Soft and Hard Surfaces," while Mr. Matthew J. Inman, EE Graduate Student, received the Valued Service Award for 4 years of work on the ACES Web Site. Dr. Elsherbeni also received a Valued Service Award for exceptional efforts and innovative development as ACES Electronic Publishing Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the ACES Journal.
