EE DEPARTMENT TO ESTABLISH CENTER FOR APPLIED ELECTROMAGNETIC SYSTEMS RESEARCH (CAESR)

The Department of Electrical Engineering recently obtained approval from The University of Mississippi and the Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Higher Learning of the State of Mississippi to establish a Center for Applied Electromagnetic Systems Research. This center's mission is to foster the growth of research and education in applied electromagnetic theory and its applications, which form the foundation for the development of new research and engineering tools, computational simulation models for conducting scientific research, engineering analysis, design, and development in the commonly known electrical engineering technology areas of RF, wireless, microwave, millimeter wave, infrared, and optics.

The proposed Center for Applied Electromagnetic Systems Research (CAESR) will be affiliated with the Electrical Engineering Department in the School of Engineering. The main objective of the center is to develop and maintain a center of excellence in electromagnetic theory and its applications for this very important area of engineering that is of significant national and international interest.

The Mission of the Center for Applied Electromagnetic Systems Research is to:

  1. Maintain a vigorous basic and applied research program in electromagnetics to serve as a viable source of expertise, creativity, and innovations.
  2. Educate students and practicing professionals with knowledge on the frontiers of electromagnetics and applications for design and development in the areas of RF (radio frequency), wireless, microwave, and millimeter wave circuits, antennas, scatterers, infrared, and optics with emphasis on computational electromagnetics.
  3. Provide facilities and support for students, faculty, and other researchers required to explore new principles and concepts in electromagnetics and wireless technology and applications.
  4. Apply available resources to solutions of specific problems and applications through internal and external contracts and grants, and through technology transfer with emphasis on promotion of economic development.
  5. To promote exchange of knowledge and experience through cooperative research agreements with other academic, industry, and research organizations.

The Faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department at The University of Mississippi has been recognized nationally and internationally for their contributions in this area of expertise over the past 30 years, and this center of excellence is being established to continue their work and to maintain our comprehensive basic and applied research programs of the highest quality in the broadest spectrum of applications of electromagnetic theory and to provide expertise and innovative solutions for related opportunities in applied electrical sciences through education, research, and service. The Center will seek to preserve and create new knowledge on the frontiers of the application of electrical science and technology related to areas of RF, wireless, microwave, millimeter waves, infrared, optics, and telecommunications and wireless along with its affiliated Center for Wireless Communications (CWC). At the same time, these Centers will seek to educate the next generation of electrical engineering teachers and practitioners that will lead the nation into the wireless-based information age. CAESR and CWC will also pursue an economic development program to assist, revitalize, and promote the growth of the industry of the State of Mississippi and the Nation based on a partnership with The University and supporting industries from our business communities.
