Another New Assistant Professor Joins EE Department For 2002

Dr. Mustafa M. Matalgah

The Department of Electrical Engineering at The University of Mississippi is pleased to announce that Dr. Mustafa M. Matalgah, who was formerly employed by Sprint PCS in Eenexa, KS, will join the department this fall for the 2002-2003 academic year, where he will teach primarily in computer engineering and telecommunications and pursue research in telecommunications. He is a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia. A biographical sketch for Dr. Matalgah is given below to provide background information on our newest EE faculty member.

Dr. Mustafa M. Matalgah received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1996 from the University of Missouri - Columbia, M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1990 from Jordan University of Science & Technology, and B.S. degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering in 1987 from Yarmouk University, Irbid, Jordan.

From 1987 to 1990, he was a graduate teaching and research assistant in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Jordan University of Science & Technology. In 1990, he worked in the Faculty of Medicine at Jordan University of Science & Technology on a research project dealing with heartbeat sound (Phonocardiogram) signal analysis using time-frequency representations. From 1991 to 1996, he was a graduate teaching instructor and research assistant in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Missouri. From 1996 to 1997, he was with Sprint LDD Transmission Engineering Department and worked on projects in the areas of digital and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) transmission systems. From 1997 to 2002, he was with Sprint PCS and held various positions as Senior/Principal Network Systems Research Engineer and Senior Planner in the departments of Technology Research & Development, Broadband Wireless Technology Development, Systems & Technology Integration Center, and Operational System Support Network Engineering. At Sprint PCS, he led projects on the evaluation and assessment of third-generation (3G) and Next Generation Wireless Communication Networks (NGN). Projects he worked on involve ATM, IP & MPLS transport evolution in the Radio Access Network (RAN), IP & RF Quality of Service (QoS), Voice over Packet (VoP) for 3G wireless Mobile Communication Systems, and IS-41/IS-771 Advanced Intelligent Wireless Networks Messaging. In the area of Broadband Wireless Communications, he worked on the evaluation and assessment of RF air interface emerging technologies for Next Generation Wireless Internet Access Networks. RF Technologies that he has worked on include CDMA2000, WCDMA, OFDM, and packet-based Internet CDMA. In 2000, he was an Adjunct Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. Starting August 2002 he will be joining the University of Mississippi in Oxford as an Assistant Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department providing teaching primarily in computer engineering and telecommunications and pursuing research in telecommunications.

His technical and research interests span the fields of emerging wireless communications systems, signal processing, optical binary matched filters, and computer communication networks. He has published more than 40 Journal and conference papers, and technical reports in these areas. He filed one U.S. patent for facilitating end-to-end QoS in a wireless packet data system. He received two certificates of recognition at Sprint PCS for Y2K cluster testing success and for his research accomplishments in next-generation wireless communications. He received an IEEE award for his book chapter in biomedical engineering published in the IEEE press in 1998. He served as program committee member and session chair in international conferences and contributed as editorial reviewer for refereed journals & Conferences. He is a senior member of the IEEE.
