Notes from the Chair

After many years as a professor in the department, I took on a new challenge as chair of the department on July 1. A graduate from a few years ago recently said to me, “You have some big shoes to fill.” He was certainly correct. Dr. Charles Smith has done a great job as chair. We all wish he could have continued, but everyone deserves to rest at some point (not that he is now). Dr. Smith is still working with us and performing research for the department in the new Center for Applied Electromagnetics Systems Research (CAESR).

There are many challenges for me as the new chair, not the least of which is learning the intricacies of the system, finding files, etc. There are also many new opportunities. With the CAESR, the Center for Wireless Communications (CWC), and the addition this year of Dr. Lei Cao and Dr. Mustafa Matalgah as new faculty to support the CWC, we expect to grow and be more productive in the future. Our undergraduate electrical engineering program is also evolving, with new emphases in computer engineering, telecommunications, and RF/wireless engineering. Each of these new programs will offer more opportunities for our undergraduates.

With faculty continuing to garner awards for both teaching and research and students continuing to receive University wide awards as well as external awards, we look forward to the challenges ahead.

Please don’t be strangers. Come by to visit the department when you can, and let us know what we can do to improve our program. Your support and suggestions will be appreciated.

Dr. Allen W. Glisson Jr.
